Walt Benda: Dig and Dive

By Melissa Patrick 2-25-14

You won’t find him heading towards the school buses outside filled with loud middle school children or rushing home to relax in a room with the perfection combination of heat and air conditioning, instead you’ll find him running laps and doing burpees in the gym gearing up for the upcoming volleyball season.

Breezing through intramurals, Walt Benda can easily be called one of the best junior volleyball players on the men’s volleyball team. Not only can he smash someone’s face in with a simple spike, but he’s always able to put his all into the sport.

The varsity player has been a captain for three years and is ready to finish off his last two years of the sport off right.

“I am a little anxious about this year considering we lost a very good player who was a close friend of mine. I’m not quite sure how this season is going to turn out but I’m excited to meet all the new boys trying out, and give it our absolute best to try and make this a great season.”

Walt agrees he’s not a perfect player, but he also agrees that he has worked hard enough to call himself a good player.

“I personally think that’ I can improve on my communication. While absorbed in the game, I may come off a little harsh, but that’s just because I’m really passionate about volleyball, and I understand it’s something I need to work on.”

His club coach, Robert Rios (who might come off a tad bit feisty), has taught him almost everything he knows. From his technique to his attitude during the game you can tell that Robert Rios has obviously been doing something correct.

According to Robert Rios, Walt is unsinkable. Walt is a kindhearted person who is always looking for opportunities to improve himself, as well as his teammates. Whether it is physically, or mentally, Walt is always doing his best.

After the lost to SECTA during the playoffs the player was devastated.

“I was devastated by the loss of course, but it showed us what we had to improve on for the next year. It also showed us how far we had come from the previous year to have actually made it to semifinals.”

According to Benda although the game last year was an upsetting one, the past is the past, and this year not even SECTA can stop the varsity team.

Walt is determined to make this season a great one for those who call this season their last, the seniors. With teammates and a drive you can win every game you play.

“I feel like we have the potential to be really good this year as long as we stay together as a team, and play like a family. Once we do that, all other things will fall into place.”

Walt Benda will be one to watch when you attend the volleyball games either home or away.
