Men’s Volleyball Prepares for Another Season

Hard work and dedication, late night practices, and long bus rides. It’s more than just the occasional practices when it comes down to Coach Linda Silver and men’s volleyball. Men’s volleyball is down and ready to get the season going.
With the two upsetting losses of their top seniors, there will be a hectic try-out session.“
Those are two big shoes we need to fill,” says head coach Silver. “They [men’s volleyball] will have to show their talent to become one of the top seeds this year.”
After securing the 3rd seed in the men’s Division 1-A last year and an upsetting loss to SECTA in the playoffs, once the season starts the team plans to give it their all.“
I feel as if this season is going to be interesting. I’m excited to work with the new people,” says three-year Captain Walt Benda. “So far during intramurals I see some potential already, and I am hoping that they can actually impact us after our two key losses.”
Walt Benda, a junior, earned freshman of the year and earned honorable mention while playing under the assistance of Coach Silver.“
She [Silver] might not come off as the nicest coach but she does push us,” says setter Walter Regalado. “When she yells at us, we know she wants us to get better—it’s motivation.”
Men’s volleyball practices after school almost every day.“
We try to fit around the schedule of the men’s and women’s basketball, and since they are always in the gym practicing, it takes up a lot of the space,” says Jinnie Monsalve—manager for the men’s varsity volleyball.
That doesn’t stop them.
The boys put on their running shoes and head to the track. They run miles within a certain amount of time and will run more if they don’t make it in time.“
The weather isn’t a problem to me, my main problem is motivating the other players into pushing themselves as hard as I push myself,” says Walt Benda. “Making it far is a team effort, and to be a team we need to be able to trust each other and push each other to our furthest extents.”
At the end of the day, the winner of it all is determined by, “Who wants it more?”
According to Coach Silver, I can tell which boy wants it and which boy doesn’t. I don’t like losing but a good loss is something I will live with. I will not live with the boys not even trying or attempting to play to their fullest potential.“
We plan to play every game like it’s our last, because one day it will be,” Silver concluded.
