The Start of a New
Beginning

By Dorinda Wu 6-3-14

The school year’s ending and seniors are nearing the end of their high school road. Aside from the graduating class of 2014, the incoming classes of 2015-2017 are already busy preparing for the new set of expectations.

Becoming an upperclassman, to many, entails more expectations and more stress. PSAT, SAT, ACT, AP classes, college applications, the list seems to be never-ending and timed too closely together.

Michelle Malwane, sophomore, said, “I’m worried about taking the PSAT and SAT and having more AP classes, but I’m excited about getting closer to senior year. At the same time I’m scared that junior year will fly by too fast.”

Junior year is claimed to be one of the more demanding school years. We’ve been warned that colleges look closely at that year and how it’s the final year of grades inputted before it’s sent off to colleges.

The summer of junior year is usually when students are able to start volunteering at local organizations and work at age sixteen.

For incoming seniors, their minds are filled with anxiety at the things that are left to accomplish. It’s the year to take action.

It’s time to search to for colleges and prepare for the grueling college application process. It’s their last chance to complete the requirements colleges ask for. High enough SAT and ACT scores, a good amount of community work, extracurricular activities and sports, and to maintain a good GPA. All needed to become the well-rounded individual colleges want to see.

Summertime is great time to boost your resume. Some current juniors are already preparing ahead by taking summer courses to gain college credits.

For future sophomores, it’s too early to think about colleges but this is the year where students are recommended to choose an extracurricular activity to hold on to. The depth of commitment can mean much more than the length of activities done.

As for seniors, the end right now leads to the start of a new beginning.

College is the new stepping stone in life despite the new challenges and stress it may give. Teachers, college students, our parents, or adults we know have told us stories of their college experience. Most of them were how college was a new experience and how it was part of their best memories in their life.

“It’s the start of a new page,” said Vinna Adrada, senior.

Chargers, enjoy the final days of the school year and summer. The end of the school year is the start of something new.
