The 5 Most Annoying Things About Riding the Bus to School

By Courtney Dickinson 2-13-14

For those of us in one of Clark’s three magnet programs, there’s one thing we all have to face at some point: the bus. Some of us only have to ride occasionally, and get rides from our parents most of the time. But some of us have parents that just don’t love us enough to do that. So you learn to live with the many annoying things about riding the bus to school.

1. Middle Schoolers. We all were them once, but now that we’re in high school, they just seem so much more annoying. With the age difference, it’s hard to have much in common with them or have good conversations with them. And of course, we all know those awkward 6th graders that just always seem confused. But that still doesn’t give them the right to be creepy or annoying.

2. Getting up early. Since early bird starts at 7:15, we all already have to get up pretty early. But with the bus, we all have to get up even earlier. So even though you can sleep on the bus, which isn’t very comfortable, it’s still impossible to get a good amount of sleep and still ride the bus.

3. It’s boring. Because it is a bus, there isn’t much you can actually do. No bus ride is smooth, so they’re all too bouncy to get any homework done. And if you want to listen to music or play games on your phone, it’s unlikely that your battery will last long enough to get you through both bus rides and a school day. And most of the time you don’t get to ride the bus with anyone interesting, so conversations are pretty much out of the question.

4. Rules. No eating. No chewing gum. Face forward. These are just a few of the pointless rules that the bus drivers try to enforce. Usually, you can get away with a lot of these things by hiding behind the seats, or you’re lucky enough to have a bus driver that doesn’t care. But these rules still limit what you can do during that 30 minute to an hour you have between school and home, and easily wastes your time.

5. Waiting. First, you have to wait at your bus stop. This includes either standing around waiting, or waiting in the car awkwardly with your parents. Then once you’re on the bus, it’s just another waiting game until you get to school. Then after an almost 8 hour school day, you get to wait around outside the buses until they finally let you on. Then, you sit on the bus, again waiting for 10 minutes until your bus gets to leave. And then you wait some more to get to your stop again, which is most likely a school, so it’s like you’re back at square one.

So even though most of us will have to face it one day, it’s hard to learn to live with the many annoying things that come with riding the bus to school, and complaining about it always makes everything better.
