READesign: A Change for the Best

The purpose of the READesign library project is to promote literacy and to engage more students with reading.
The project was funded with a $65,000 grant from the Heart of America Foundation and Capital One.
Librarian, Ms. Ceniza, said, “The students have been very positive. There were a lot of excitement about the renovation, and we were very busy when we opened. Students came in because they were curious about what it looked like.”
Lime green-colored chairs have now taken the place of the standard blue chairs. The tables were replaced, and the lounge area was revamped. The once blank walls are now painted in hues of blue with quotes lining across the top.
350 new books were added to the system, and each A.O.F. student received three new books.
“There’s more use put into the library. It’s nice to see the new books getting checked out,” said Ms. Ceniza.
Senior, Scarlett Lueck, said, “I do wish they’d demolish one of the walls like we asked, otherwise, the new college center is insane.”
The college and career center is shared with the computer room located at the back of the library. The addition of beanbag chairs, a sofa, couches, and lamps offers a comfy environment. The walls are now adorned with college banners and a wall of heroes.
It was a one day renovation. Approximately 30 to 40 community members and volunteers from Capital One came in to help with the moving and painting.
The READesign library project is known for engaging corporate team members, community team members, and volunteers to complete a project.
“The best part is seeing the Las Vegas community come together to achieve one goal. We see out-of-state and in-state people coming here to help. It’s a wonderful thing to see,” said Ms. Ceniza.
A formal ribbon cutting ceremony was held last Tuesday in celebration of the completion of the READesign library project.

As some students may already know, the library had been closed two weeks ago due to the READesign library project. Now reopened, the library holds more books and a cozier environment. The Project was funded by Heart of America Foundation and Capital One, and with the help of the local community, the READesign project ended as a huge success.
