Open house: Parents get familiar with Clark

Open house was a chance for parents to familiarize themselves with Clark better and to see what opportunities are offered.
Junior, Alyson Nakamura, said, “It allows teachers to know more about their students and their home lives, and that helps them to teach better. A better connection between parents and teachers helps a kid learn.”
Open house acquaints parents with Clark, its programs, and activities that their childrenare or will be active in. Teachers get to introduce their courses to the parents, informing them of what is expected of the class and later goals.
The two-hour event started in the cafeteria where a variety of club and sports booths introduced themselves to the interested students and parents.
Administrators mingled, welcoming the parents and engaging in short conversations before the classroom visitation period began, taking advantage of the time to connect.
“It was the time when parents could see how their kid could be more active around school and know what choices they could choose from,” said Nakamura. “Clark has a lot of great clubs that students can join in, so it’s nice seeing a lot of them showing interest.”
Mrs. Vine, science teacher, said, “There were more clubs and activities in the cafeteria. They drew in a crowd of students and parents, which in turn, students signed up for.”
Compared to the previous years of open house, this year’s was more active with the number of extracurricular activity booths displayed in the cafeteria. Aside from having promoted more clubs and activities, open house was also described as more “streamlined and efficient” by Mrs. Vine.
The strange part of this year’s open house, as noted by several attendees, was that there wasn’t an introductory speech to start the evening off.
Sophomore, Sarah Mekonnen, said,“I felt that there wasn’t much of a difference. There were just as much people this year as last year.” Still, she said, “Overall, it was a good experience. I’m glad that parents got to see what their kids do in each class and have the chance to meet with each teacher.”
As usual, Clark’s annual open house was a success.
September 10, after school, parents and students were welcomed to Clark with melodious tunes played by the symphonic orchestra, the enthusiasm of ROTC, and chargers in the cafeteria for open house.
