Clark HS is known for its winning reputation. So far in the 2014 school year Clark has won numerous first place competitions including two state championships in tennis and basketball. But there is one organization that is not so known for winning. The NJROTC unit.
If you have ever been inside the two classrooms located in the cafeteria, you would see dozens of trophies. There are so many that most of them cannot be displayed.
According top Commander Daniel Jorvig the senior naval science instructor, build a reputation of a winning team and the cadets feel a responsibility to maintain it. I think there are a few setbacks, but pride puts extra motivation into the cadets.
Despite getting buff and smart “discipline”, the main trait that top Cadet Commander Austin Carter believes students will gain from being in the unit. Although there is a lot of hard work and time dealing with marching in parades, having good uniform for inspections, staying physically fit, studying hard during academic days, the cadets still love to have fun.
“Fun increases Cadets’ motivation”, claimed top enlisted senior Master Chief Petty Officer Anthony Meira.
Drill team commanders and Platoon leaders make sure that the students are felling motivated and can be rewarded greatly. Even though they try to have fun, Cadets’ who show true leadership and great potential can climb their way through the ranks and become the future leaders at the school.
The enlisted ranks are seaman recruit, seaman apprentice, seaman, petty officer 3rd class, petty officer 2nd class, petty officer 1st class, chief petty officer, senior chief petty officer, and the highest Master Chief Petty Officer. The officer ranks are Ensign, Lieutenant Junior Grade, Lieutenant, Lieutenant Commander, and Commander.
The three drill teams are Armed Drill Team, Unarmed Drill Team, and Color Guard. Armed Drill team is the team that spins the rifles. You can see them at certain assembly’s or follow them to certain drill competitions. They are known for their muscular strength, creativity, and military style when spinning.
Unarmed Drill team is the team that slaps their legs, stomps on the ground, and show how the girls themselves can shine amongst military.
Color Guard is the team that presents the flags and rifle during competitions and many events. You can see them at football games, assemblies, and many competitions. They bring the honor, purity, and vigilance to the great unit.
And of course we cannot forget our physical, air rifle, and academics teams who don’t take on the main spotlights but they still prove they have tremendous talent and accolades. These teams are the main reason of all the success and trophies and the leaders of these teams make sure that they do their best.
“You grow the sense of responsibility towards your cadet(s) and that is what you feel being their leader,” said Cadet Chief Petty Officer Carlos Diaz believes that as the leaders of this unit, they are responsible for maintaining the success. Cadets like Ramiro Ornelas who is on the armed drill team say “it is a lot of fun”
“Greater participation” is what Commander Jorvig believes our unit needs, but we still have that pride, joy, and motivation to succeed. And with the continuous success of the teams, Clark’s NJROTC program will continue to climb the success ladder for a long time.
