Last Minute AP Exam Preparation

By Dorinda Wu 4-28-14

AP exams are one of the greatest stresses to students and the dates are nearing. Perhaps procrastination has made some students lose hope in ever getting their dream score, but proper last minute preparation can help ensure a more successful test taking experience for the next two weeks.

Taking AP exams and getting a good score is never a simple feat. There are AP students that dedicate weeks, if not months, before the dreaded date to review for the subject. For those who have waited to the last minute, don’t give up, and try to make the most out of the rest of your time with these tips.

Arm up with all the necessities

A review book is an essential part to self-studying. Because you’re dedicating a week to studying nearly seven months’ worth of material, a good review book can cover the necessary concepts to know in a condensed manner.

Use all the available resources

Attend AP study sessions if they’re offered. Form study groups with friends. Try teaching your friends the material because being able to do so ensures you that you have gotten the material down.

Search for videos to solidify material. Certain concepts in subjects such as chemistry, math, and biology can get confusing. Rather than staring at the text in frustration, try using videos for a better explanation.

Be organized

Divide the week into sections of what you plan to study. Know your study habits and keep an organized schedule. Stay on pace.

Find strategies and practice

If rote memorization isn’t going well, try using different memorization strategies. Use mnemonic devices, like acronyms, such as ROYGBIV.

Take those practice tests. Don’t just stop after one if you’re not confident. The more practice, the less difficult the material will be. Practice is the key.

Get a good night’s rest

Sometimes sleep is the best preparation for a test. Staying well-rested can help retain information better. It’s better to sleep well then cram before a major test than cramming while being tired. So try to do some last minute cramming in the morning after a good night’s rest.

Be confident

Believe in yourself. Panicking will cause only cause you to lose focus. On exam day, don’t dwell on questions you don’t know. Skip it and come back to it later. Be sure to keep a positive mindset and visualize success.

AP exam preparation isn’t recommended to be accomplished within a week. Use this week wisely and get the most out of your last minute studying time.
