Girls’ Flag Football
By Bobbie Floyd 1-28-14

Another season of another sport. This sport is much more than your typical football, basketball or track. This sport involves a group of athletic girls chasing each other while one girl is carrying a piece of pigskin. Instead of your everyday masculine tackling—it’s a flag that the girls must remove to prevent one another from scoring.
Varsity
The girls’ flag football team has come down to an undefeated season. Only two games have been played, but they are giving Clark High School great notice.
“My team hustles a lot,” says Imani May, senior second year varsity letterer. “We look out for each other on and off the field.”
Clark High School’s girls’ flag football team was able to hold off the Cheyenne Desert Shields in an 18-6 game. Clark scored two touchdowns in the second quarter and there was a rush of excitement in the stands and the field. It was an away game, but Clark still supported the team.
“I thought we were going to lose at our first away game,” says junior Olivia Berenguel. “It was a new atmosphere with a different group of girls that were inexperienced.”
They did far from losing.
Another game came later that week against the Liberty Patriots. Both teams scoring only in the fourth quarter brought up the intensity and the anxiety, but our fighting Clark Chargers were able to pull through scoring 12 points and leaving the patriots to a six point score.
“I feel we played well,” says junior Stephanie Chavez. “The defense we played is what got us the win.”
Junior Varsity (JV)
With the coaching assistance of Coach Moyle and Coach Sesto, the Junior varsity girls are looking to become a superb team.
“The JV team is looking really good so far— I am excited to see how our season goes,” says Coach Sesto.
Coach Sesto is ready to help coach this sport. It’s her first year coaching as well as her first year teaching. She is determined to make sure that she does the job right and comes out with an outcome that satisfies her as well as the coaching staff rest of the team.
When asked how he feels that his team will do this year, Coach Moyle answered, “I think the ladies will do very well. They are motivated to learn the sport. All of our girls are new to the sport so it will be a great learning experience for all of us.”
Coach Moyle has been at school for quite some time. He teaches Algebra I, Pre-Calculus Honors and Algebra II.
Both the varsity and junior varsity teams look forward to a successful team playing as Clark Chargers.
