From a Coyote to a Charger

By Brittnie Truax 9/15/15

August 24, 2015. Oh wait, scratch that. August 27, 2015; the last first day of my high school career. This year was different, however, as this Southwest Coyote would soon become a Clark Charger. As with some in unfamiliar environments, an array of emotions clouded my head. Nervousness, excitement, impatience, fear (yes, I’m a senior who fears 14-18 year olds).

The day started in the library, a pretty odd place but definitely comforted my nerves to be surrounded by books, a calming device of words. I figured there would be a brightly colored cardstock schedule ready for myself. About two and a half hours were spent attempting to keep my mind awake in case my name was finally announced. Luckily, other students were in my position and made jokes, which drove away my fear and kept a smile on my face.

Once my name was called after what was forever, I made my way to the counselors (almost losing myself in the crowd of students). I was able to create my own schedule, something I NEVER would have been able to do at Southwest. As soon as it was printed, I was set to take a tour.

“Holy crap, I’m gonna get lost!” I constantly said because holy crap I underestimated Clark’s size! Coming from Southwest, everything is so split off and separated, making it easier to navigate. There were about eight different buildings, four of them two floors. There’s hardly any busy human traffic going between classes, short distances to walk and open space versus the tight spaces between people who make better walls than windows. I knew from that moment that I was actually going to experience a real high school life.

The day went on, introducing myself and meeting new teachers and students. The best part was avoiding the whole awkward “getting to know you” hour of telling the class what I did during the summer and what places I visited and blah blah blah. Unfortunately, I did still have to explain my transfer and what school I came from and why. I definitely preferred that over the first days I would have at Southwest with the same people I’ve seen since freshman year.
